FREETOWN, Sierra Leone: Global Africa Media (GAM) acting Executive Director-Francis Limontas Archepong condemns the consistent attacks on Journalists by reported members of the ruling All People’s Congress Party in the presence of security apparatus in Freetown.
“Attack on Journalists is a threat to democracy and a deliberate attempt to muzzle press freedom,” said Archepong.
According to the Global Africa News’ correspondent, three Journalists-Patrick Jaiah Kamara a Reporter for Concord Times Newspaper, Thomas Dixon-Editor of Salone Times Newspaper and Ibrahim Samura-Managing Editor of New Age Newspaper were severely harassed and assaulted over the weekend-Saturday 31st March, 2018 whilst documenting Presidential election run-off.
At the peak of the scuffle, Concord Times’ Patrick Jaiah Kamara’s camera-Canon EOS-70D got damaged and the money on him were taken away and the Sierra Leone Police personnel stood there like a mere bystander. This is unprofessional and amounts to blatant human right abuse by those perpetrators.
We are now calling on authorities of the APC led government to unconditionally condemn and investigate and take appropriate remedial actions.
We continue to urge the Independent Media Commission, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists and the Sierra Leone Police to urgently provide unlimited protection and security for all journalists.
