Speaker of Parliament in Sierra Leone, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Abass Chernor Bundu wants the cost of air ticket reduced. He recently urged the newly approved Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority to work the mathematics out to ensure the difference.
Dr. Bundu noted the importance of the industry and was particular that “the air route is extremely expensive especially the route from Freetown to Europe and to the rest of the world.
Sierra Leone wants a boom in the tourism sector and one way to boost the foreign exchange revenue growth with scores of tourists in the country, according to Dr. Abass Bundu is to liberalize the ticket fare. Another MP, Hon. Bashiru Siliki added his voice to the clarion call on the new DG to reduce the air ticket price.
In an exclusive interview with him after his approval by the plenary sitting of Parliament on Thursday 19th July 2018 along with seven other people, Moses Tiffa Baio said his appointment was as a result of his longstanding performance at the institution.
He admitted to the fact that Sierra Leone has the most expensive air fare rates in the sub-region, but said the institution would conducting a comparative study on prices of air tickets across the sub-region for possible realignment after considering the underlying factors.
He said President Maada Bio has plans to increase accessibility to air traveling in the region, and this he said is possible only when air fares are reduced for everybody.
Director Baio furthered that both the Government and the Civil Aviation Authority should work on the formula on the high cost to devalue the high ticket cost which in turn would give Sierra Leoneans more access to travel abroad.
He gave the statistics of less than two hundred people in the lot of seven million people in Sierra Leone that are travelling in and out of Sierra Leone annually, which represents less than five percent of the country’s population.
