NRA Is Investigating DSTV

The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority, Dr Samuel Jibao, has said that Transnational Sierra Leone Limited (DSTV Sierra Leone) is under investigation for alleged tax evasion.

There have been many tax evasion allegations levied against the company and it was recently reported that the company connived with some NRA staff to avoid paying six billion Leones tax.

“DSTV is evading tax… We heard about that and it’s not only DSTV but so many others are being investigated,” Commissioner General Dr. Samuel Jibao said.

The Commissioner General said they are still cleaning their data and NRA is involved in a lot of audit as they are doing massive audit of processes.

He said if the NRA finds any entity culpable there would be consequences, adding that so far these audits have recovered a lot of money.

“We have maintained that the issue is under investigations like any other businesses that are audited… so if DSTV is investigated we should not be surprise,” he said.

The Commissioner said he has discovered that a huge amount of business owners are not fully compliant with their tax obligations especially when it comes to the Goods and Services Tax.

He noted that some business people have made a habit of paying less than the required tax by under-pricing their imported goods.

“What I can tell my importers is that I have the capability now to see your export declaration. So this issue of under valuation, you would try but definitely we are not going to encourage that,” he warned.

Meanwhile Transnational Sierra Leone Limited has expressed disappointment at the allegations and appealed to its customers “that Transnational (SL) ltd, the sole authorized agent for DSTV service in Sierra Leone has never evaded tax and is ready to justify it.”
