_*President Bio to Attend the Funeral Ceremony of Kofi Atta Anna in Accra*_
His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio will depart Sierra Leone on Wednesday 12th September 2018 to attend the state funeral and private burial ceremony of the former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Atta Annan.
The late Kofi Atta Annan will be buried on Thursday, 13th September 2018, at a military cemetery in Accra, Ghana and scores of world leaders, past and present, are expected to pay their last respects to the seventh United Nations Secretary General.
Reflecting on the passing away of the first United Nations Secretary General who hailed from Sub-saharan Africa, His Excellency President Bio said: _*“Sierra Leone will never forget his personal commitment to our country when as United Nations Secretary General he recommended to the United Nations Security Council for the establishment of a robust United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) that helped our country not only with the disarmament and demobilization of around 45,000 ex-combatants but also created the confidence for the smooth implementation of the Lomé peace agreement. The world will always remember Kofi Annan as a great champion for the universal values of equality, multilateralism, tolerance, human dignity and his dedication to peace.”*_
Kofi Atta Annan passed away on 18th August 2018 in Switzerland after a brief illness at the age of 80. He served the United Nations as the seventh UN Secretary General from 1997 to 2006. He was also jointly awarded with the United Nations the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.
The remains of the former United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Atta Annan, arrived in Accra on Monday, 10th September 2018, for the start of the three-day state funeral organised by the government of Ghana and he will be buried on Thursday, 13th September 2018.
