Libel: Former President Koroma under investigation

Former President Ernest Bai Koroma

The Director of Crimes Services of the Sierra Leone Police, Ibrahim Jah, has issued an invitation letter to the former president of Sierra Leone Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma who doubles as Chairman and Leader of the All Peoples Congress.

Flaring comments have inundated the public since the issuance of the letter, January 14th 2019. According to the letter, the former president is to appear at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on the 16th, January 2019, to clarify contents of a Press Release published by the end of last month in which the opposition say they would not subject their members to the proposed commissions of inquiry if the commissions are not properly constituted.

Properly constituted, according to members of the APC, is for the three commissions to incorporate the rules of evidence which stands as the bone of contention with the opposition.

The police sources say they are investigating libelous content as maybe contained in the said press release and further allegations of inciting the public against the government as the opposition stood accused of pandering ethnic cleansing and regional divisive politics.

To supporters of the All Peoples Congress and the former president, it is all about showing solidarity to one of their kind. Many who spoke to SierraleoNews say as  former president, Ernest Bai Koroma deserves all the respect to be treated as one who has held the highest office in the land as President. According to them, his invitation to the CID is demeaning of his status and that of his party.

The police are saying that it is a matter of doing their job and nothing else without selective justice. “Having obtained statements from eleven out of the fifteen members of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) members who met and agreed on the press release dated 28 December 2018, which is subject of this investigation as it has the tendency to threaten the peace and security of this country, it is now glaring that the investigation will be inconclusive without without hearing the side of the Chairman and Leader of the APC party.”  the Police letter reads in part.

His interview is to be done at a time the government set up commissions of inquiries are to commence. That too in a few days time. President Koroma is accused of having committed various acts of corruption when he was in office.
