The lady engineers took to the streets this morning to make noise and a statement about women in engineering in the country. There was a lot of excitement in the air, fun and sorority as ladies reconnected with their colleagues while exercising.
By police escort, an Africell truck provided music ahead of a long stream of lady engineers showing off their Hardhats and marching along supported by a Band playing lovely tunes. Despite the rain, lady engineers persisted till they got to Family Kingdom, Aberdeen. The occasion was graced by the Mayor of Freetown, Her Worship Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Miss Sierra Leone the lovely Ms. Tucker and the UNOPS Country Manager Ing. Nick Gardner. The walk was supported by the Sierra Leone Red Cross First Aid Volunteers.
At Family Kingdom, the ladies stopped for a light break and a rallying speech by our SLWE President Ing. Trudy Morgan exhorting the young engineers and encouraging young girls to take up the profession. Ladies also got to hear from Miss Sierra Leone, the UNOPS Country Manager and a supportive message from the Mayor of Freetown who is also a lady.
The event ended with group pictures, the start of a creation of a database of women engineers and socializing.
