Torrential rainfall and flash flooding have affected several parts of Senegal, leaving people dead or injured and damaging infrastructure and transportation networks.
Torrential rainfall and flash flooding have affected several parts of Senegal, leaving parts of Dakar underwater and causing deaths, injuries and widespread damage to infrastructure and transportation.
The Ministry of Interior confirmed that several people were killed or injured in incidents linked to the flooding. The ministry did not provide an exact total.
In the city of Matam, a 25-year-old woman and her 4-year-old child died after a wall collapsed, according to information on the incident.
Heavy rain affects multiple regions
Some areas recorded more than 140 millimetres of rain in a single day. The rainfall affected regions beyond the capital, although a complete list of affected areas and a full assessment of the damage were not provided.
The flooding also disrupted transportation and caused widespread infrastructure damage. Parts of Dakar remained affected after the heavy rainfall and flash floods.
Authorities have warned that more rain is expected in the coming days, raising concerns for areas already exposed to flooding and structural damage.
Government response
President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed condolences to the victims and said the government was fully mobilised to strengthen vigilance in exposed areas.
The flooding comes just weeks before Senegal is due to host the Youth Olympics. The event is scheduled to begin on October 31.
