Hundreds of Iranian Americans and supporters rallied outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, calling for political change in Iran to be led by the Iranian people.

Speakers at the rally argued that political change in Iran should come from the Iranian people rather than through foreign military action. Their comments came as the United States and Iran exchanged sharply different warnings and officials from both countries held talks on the sidelines of the United Nations gathering.
Calls for Iranian-led change
Fereshteh Dameshfar said military action by the United States would not remove Iran’s government. She argued that the Iranian people should bring about political change, with support for the NCRI and Rajavi.
“It’s going to have to be the people of Iran themselves who change their own government,” said Wesley Clark, a retired United States general and former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Europe.
Clark also said people at the United Nations should support the NCRI as a provisional government. Jafar Sadaghi appealed to countries to support the council and the Iranian people, while warning that attacks killing ordinary Iranians would not resolve the situation.
Sharp statements from Washington and Tehran
The rally took place after United States President Donald Trump addressed the General Assembly. In his speech, Trump presented a choice between reaching an agreement that would allow Iran to rebuild and annihilating the Islamic Republic.
“Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?” Trump said.
Tehran’s military dismissed the threat and said it was prepared to respond with what it described as crushing attacks against the United States and Israel.
Talks held on UN sidelines
Top United States and Iranian officials also held talks for the first time in months during the United Nations gathering. Qatar mediated the discussions, but no breakthrough was reported.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was due to address the General Assembly on Wednesday. The rally’s participants used the gathering to press their case for international support for the NCRI and for political change led by Iranians themselves.
