Ruto urges financial reforms as Partners for Multilateralism platform launches

Kenyan President William Ruto has called for reforms to the international financial architecture, arguing that multilateral and development financial institutions should do more than provide loans to African countries.

Ruto made the remarks at the Partners for Multilateralism Summit, held on the margins of United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week. The meeting brought together countries supporting stronger multilateral cooperation, international law, peace and sustainable, inclusive prosperity.

The summit was co-hosted by Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, the European Union, India and Kenya.

Focus on Africa’s existing resources

Ruto said international partners should look beyond the amount of money they can bring to Africa and consider how global financial systems could help unlock resources already available on the continent.

“The question to our international partners should no longer be only ‘how much money can you bring to Africa. It should be how can we use the international financial architecture to unlock the money Africa already has,” he said.

He added that multilateral and development financial institutions should serve “not simply as lenders, but as catalysts.”

Ruto also questioned the ability of institutions to retain public confidence when they do not reflect the people whose cooperation they need.

“Institutions that do not reflect the people whose cooperation they require will eventually struggle to command their trust,” he said.

New platform for cooperation

António Costa, President of the European Council, launched the Partners for Multilateralism platform. He described it as an open initiative for partners from across the world who are prepared to defend shared principles and pursue practical solutions.

According to Costa, the platform will provide a network for dialogue, coalition-building and practical cooperation, allowing countries to coordinate responses to common challenges. Its core objective is to support the work of the United Nations and other multilateral formats.

The summit was convened as geopolitical tensions, conflicts, climate change and artificial intelligence place growing pressure on multilateral institutions. Participants sought to promote discussion at the highest political level on defending and strengthening the multilateral system, while advancing peace and inclusive prosperity.

The newly launched platform is intended to bring together partners from different regions around those objectives.
