The Union of Arab Football Associations has announced its support for Gianni Infantino’s bid for reelection as FIFA head next year, adding regional backing as opposition to his candidacy grows.
UAFA made the announcement after a meeting in Jeddah on Thursday. The organisation said Infantino had helped strengthen unity across the global football community and broadened the sport’s reach internationally.
UAFA represents 22 national associations from Asia and Africa. The Gulf Football Federation, which represents eight national associations, has also pledged its support for Infantino.
Opposition Builds
The backing comes as Infantino faces criticism over a proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors that failed. He has been under fire over the proposal since July.
Switzerland formally withdrew its support for Infantino on Wednesday, citing concerns about integrity, accountability and transparency. Switzerland is Infantino’s home country.
UEFA has been leading opposition to Infantino and says it will present a rival candidate before the November deadline. The European governing body has not identified that candidate.
March Vote
Infantino’s reelection will be decided in March by FIFA’s 211 member federations. The competing endorsements from regional football organisations and the planned UEFA challenge set the stage for a contested election.
