Ronaldo Leaves Portugal Camp as International Future Remains Unclear
Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal's training camp amid uncertainty over his international future, prompting sadness and criticism from supporters.
Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national-team training camp amid uncertainty about whether he will continue playing international football.
The star forward departed on Wednesday, after Portugal coach Jorge Jesus said Ronaldo would not start the team’s Nations League match against Denmark on Thursday.
Ronaldo has not publicly explained why he left the camp. He said he would do so later, telling the Portuguese people that, “in time,” he would explain the truth about the reasons for his departure.
Supporters express disappointment
The decision and the way Ronaldo’s starting status was communicated drew criticism from Portugal supporters. João Mário Cunha, a 27-year-old fan, described the situation as disrespectful toward a player he credited with helping Portugal achieve major success.
“I think it is a bit of lack of respect with a player that has put us on the map, so to speak,” Cunha said. He added that Ronaldo had delivered many trophies to the national team and, in his view, Portugal would not have won half of the trophies it has secured without him.
Cunha also questioned the public handling of the decision not to include Ronaldo in the starting 11.
“For him to leave this way, the statements of the manager shouldn’t have been made public the way they did, so I think it is sad exit,” he said, adding that supporters could attend matches less often with Ronaldo absent from the starting lineup.
Portugal defeat Denmark
Portugal went on to beat Denmark 4-2 in Copenhagen on Thursday, in the Nations League match for which Jesus had said Ronaldo would not start.
Ronaldo’s departure has fueled speculation that the 41-year-old could be approaching the end of his international career. However, it remains unclear whether he has retired from Portugal duty, why he left the camp or whether he will return during the next international break.
Fans had hoped Ronaldo might resolve his differences with Jesus and rejoin the team at a later stage. Ronaldo’s promised explanation may provide more clarity, but no date for it has been given.
