João Mário Cunha, a 27-year-old Portugal supporter, described the situation as disrespectful to a player he believes has made a major contribution to the national team.

“I think it is a bit of lack of respect with a player that has put us on the map, so to speak,” Cunha said. He added that Ronaldo had helped Portugal win trophies and argued that the team would not have won half of them without him.

Cunha also questioned the circumstances surrounding the announcement that Ronaldo would not start. “For him to leave this way, the statements of the manager shouldn’t have been made public the way they did,” he said.

Some supporters reportedly hope Ronaldo can resolve his differences with Jesus and return during the next international break. Whether that happens remains uncertain.
