SLPP Chairman Says Sierra Leone Elections Will Proceed in November 2028
SLPP National Chairman Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa says Sierra Leone's general and presidential elections will be held as scheduled in November 2028.
Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) National Chairman Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa says the country’s general and presidential elections will take place as scheduled in November 2028.
Songa made the statement in an exclusive interview with the Global Times Newspaper, saying the ruling party would not seek to alter the electoral calendar. He said responsibility for the electoral process rested with the ECSL.
“As a party, we are not going to change the electoral calendar…That’s an issue for the ECSL…As long as we are concerned, elections will go ahead in 2028,” Songa said.
His comments represent the SLPP chairman’s position on the timing of the elections. The source did not provide independent confirmation from the ECSL that the November 2028 schedule has been fixed.
Songa predicts SLPP victory
Songa also predicted that the SLPP would win the 2028 elections by a landslide, attributing the expected result to what he described as the good work of President Julius Maada Bio.
Bio is the SLPP party leader and president. Songa referred to him as the “Father of Democracy in Sierra Leone” and warned against actions that could undermine that description.
“Nothing should be done to undermine that lifelong title of one of our greatest leaders,” Songa said.
The prediction of a landslide victory was made by Songa and was not supported in the source by independent evidence or specific performance measures.
Leadership and party unity
Songa said President Bio would provide political leadership in the process of choosing the SLPP’s standard bearer for the 2028 elections. The source did not specify how the standard bearer would be selected.
The chairman also called on SLPP supporters to remain united and continue supporting President Bio. He said the party’s grassroots base had become energized since his election as national chairman exactly a year earlier.
The comments place the SLPP’s stated position on the 2028 electoral timetable, party leadership and internal unity at the centre of the party’s political messaging ahead of the next general and presidential elections.
