Goal Sierra Leone Hands Over WASH Facilities in Kenema District
Goal Sierra Leone has handed over newly constructed and improved water and sanitation facilities to communities across Kenema District.
Goal Sierra Leone has formally handed over newly constructed and improved water and sanitation facilities to communities across Kenema District.
The facilities include water points serving communities, schools and health facilities under the organisation’s rural Water, Sanitation and Hygiene programme. The intervention is expected to improve access to safe and reliable water for thousands of people across the district.
Water access expanded
A representative of Goal Sierra Leone said the organisation had been expanding access to water in Kenema District for several years.
According to the representative, Goal Sierra Leone, with support from Charity: Water, has constructed hundreds of water points across the district since 2018. The representative said the latest intervention brings the number of water points constructed by the organisation in Kenema District to 731, extending access to some of the district’s most vulnerable communities.
The source did not provide the names of the communities involved or specify the date of the handover.
Community impact
An unnamed community resident described the effect of the new water point on her daily routine, saying it had reduced the time she spent searching for water.
“Before, my morning started at 5:00 a.m. searching for water. Now, the tap is a few minutes from my house. That extra time means I can get my children ready for school, and I’m not exhausted before the day even starts. We will protect it, because it’s protecting us.”
The handover highlights the importance of continued investment in rural water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure, as well as community ownership to help keep the facilities functional and serving residents over the long term.
