Bio Commissions Healthcare Mobility Fleet for Sierra Leone
President Julius Maada Bio has commissioned 10 buses, 10 utility vehicles, a mobile maintenance workshop vehicle and 450 motorbikes for healthcare workers across Sierra Leone.
President Julius Maada Bio has commissioned a fleet of vehicles and motorbikes intended to improve healthcare workers’ mobility across Sierra Leone, with particular attention to remote and underserved communities.
The package comprises 10 buses, 10 utility vehicles, one fully equipped mobile maintenance workshop vehicle and 450 motorbikes. The initiative is designed to strengthen transport and logistical support for health personnel working in areas where access remains difficult.
Support for health delivery
President Bio described the intervention as a major milestone and said it represented the first large-scale, comprehensive mobility intervention of its kind in the health sector. He said the investment was fully funded by the Government of Sierra Leone with support from friends of the President.
“This intervention is not just about vehicles; it is about saving lives, improving access, and delivering quality healthcare where it is most needed,” President Bio said.
According to the President, stronger logistics and mobility are central to the health objectives of the Government’s “300 Days of Activism” agenda. Those objectives include targets of zero preventable deaths, zero preventable infant deaths and zero-dose children.
Bio also said the commissioning fulfilled a key promise made before his election and formed part of the country’s wider human capital development agenda, which includes health, education and social services.
Healthcare worker welfare
In a related development, Bio commended the Ministry of Health for initiating plans to construct housing for mid-level nurses and midwives in Bo. The supplied information does not specify the project’s budget, construction timeline or design details.
The President said Sierra Leone had the expertise and human resources needed to strengthen its health system without overreliance on foreign support. He assured that the Government would continue implementing initiatives aimed at improving healthcare delivery and the well-being of citizens.
Bio called on healthcare workers to uphold professionalism, promote collaboration and work collectively to deliver efficient and equitable services. He also urged Sierra Leoneans to support efforts to build a resilient healthcare system and a stronger nation.
