More than 100 pieces of clothing and accessories associated with Michael Jackson’s career are scheduled to be auctioned in Abu Dhabi as part of Julien’s Celebrity & Pop Culture Experience, taking place Dec. 7-9.
The collection includes the rhinestone-covered glove Jackson wore while performing “Billie Jean” during his 1983 Motown 25 performance, where he debuted the moonwalk. The shoes he wore during that appearance are also among the items being offered.
High-value Jackson memorabilia
Julien’s Auctions estimates that the glove could sell for between $600,000 and $800,000. The item previously sold for $430,000 in 2009.
Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien’s Auctions, said the final value would be determined by bidders participating in the public auction.
“Ultimately it will come down to two bidders duking it out, and eventually there will be one who is prepared to pay the highest price and will be the ultimate winner,” Nolan said.
Another major offering is the red leather jacket Jackson wore in the 1983 “Thriller” music video. The jacket, which sold for $1.8 million in 2011, is expected by the auction house to fetch more than $10 million this time. The loafers Jackson wore in the video will also be offered.
“There’s only one ‘Thriller’ jacket,” Nolan said, adding that it is “much more relevant to the younger generations today.” He described $10 million as a potentially conservative expectation.
Renewed interest in Jackson
Nolan attributed the auction house’s expectations in part to renewed interest in Jackson, his music, fashion and memorabilia following the success of the “Michael” biopic, which earned more than $1 billion at the global box office.
“People are having a love affair with Michael. They’re playing his music again. He’s back in the charts,” Nolan said.
The final prices for the glove, jacket and other items will be determined by bidders during the Abu Dhabi auction.
