Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has launched a new national football competition called the Sovereignty League.
The championship is planned to bring together 20 teams representing all regions of the country. Its stated purpose is to extend high-level football beyond Burkina Faso’s major cities while supporting broader nation-building efforts.
The plan associated with Traoré also aims to create opportunities for young people, professionalise the domestic league and invest in the country’s future.
Player salaries and projected jobs
Players selected for the competition are being promised monthly salaries of about $300, along with other benefits.
The presidency of Burkina Faso said the league should create 1,000 jobs and provide opportunities for young people across the country. That job figure remains a projection attributed to the presidency.
Some media reports have also said that regional governors will play a central role in organising the new competition. That reported role has not been independently confirmed.
Questions over football governance
Analysts have raised questions about how the new league will operate alongside the Burkinabe Football Federation. The federation has a special status protected under FIFA rules, according to the source report.
The launch came days after Traoré threatened to take over the federation. The threat followed Burkina Faso’s 7-0 defeat by Argentina in a friendly match.
The available information does not specify how the Sovereignty League will be integrated with the existing football administration or when its competition schedule will begin.
