Kenya Confirms Third Ebola Case as Contact Tracing Continues
Kenya has confirmed its third Ebola case, involving a 65-year-old woman linked to the country’s first two patients. Authorities say 127 of 130 identified contacts have been traced and quarantined.
Kenya has confirmed a third Ebola case as health authorities continue efforts to contain the outbreak and locate the remaining identified contacts.
Kenya’s Health Ministry said the latest patient is a 65-year-old woman and a close relative of the country’s first two Ebola cases. She had been in quarantine since October 6 before developing a fever, sore throat and fatigue.
The ministry said the risk to the wider public remained low, with no evidence of community transmission reported.
Contact tracing continues
Kenyan authorities have identified 130 contacts linked to the confirmed cases. Of those, 127 had been traced and placed in quarantine, while efforts continued to locate the remaining three.
The first confirmed case involved a 40-year-old businessman who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He died on October 5. A second case, involving another relative, was confirmed several days later.
The confirmation of the third case adds to the health authorities’ efforts to monitor people who may have been exposed and prevent further spread.
Bundibugyo strain involved
The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. There is currently no specific vaccine or treatment for this strain, according to the source report.
The Kenyan cases are linked to a wider regional health situation. The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reportedly infected more than 9,000 people and caused over 4,300 deaths. The source report did not identify the authority behind those figures.
Kenyan authorities said they would continue searching for the three contacts who had not yet been traced. The Health Ministry has maintained that the public risk remains low while surveillance and quarantine measures continue.
