Residents of Wedela, southwest of Johannesburg, are calling for stronger security after a shooting that reportedly killed more than 17 people and left the community deeply shaken.
The reported death toll was provided by local resident Siyabonga Nondabula, who said the number could be even higher. No confirmed final toll was available in the information provided.
Residents describe fear after gunfire
People inside their homes heard the shooting as it unfolded. Victor Mangaliso, a resident who said he has heart-related health issues, described the fear caused by the gunfire and his concern for his daughter, who was outside at the time.
“We heard the shooting and now I’m left traumatized,” Mangaliso said. He also called for stronger action from authorities, including the deployment of soldiers to the area.
Nondabula said shootings had occurred in the area in the past and had been associated with groups described as Zama-Zama gangs. He said the latest incident was especially distressing because community members were affected.
“Over 17 people and even more have died,” Nondabula said, adding that such an incident had not previously happened in Wedela and that he felt “very sad and traumatized.”
Police units and soldiers deployed
Police deployed specialized units and soldiers to the scene following the attack. Investigators were searching for those responsible, but no arrests had been announced at the time described.
The identities of the suspected attackers, the circumstances of the shooting and the number of people injured were not provided. Details about the weapons used and the precise scope of the security deployment were also unavailable.
Residents are increasingly demanding protection and stronger security measures as concerns about shootings, gang activity and illegal firearms persist in South Africa. The latest incident has renewed those concerns in Wedela, where residents say the community remains traumatized.
