The employees walked from Lumley to the Aberdeen Beach Roundabout and returned to Lumley. The company did not provide the number of participants, the distance covered or the duration of the walk.
Health talk focuses on workplace risks
The exercise was followed by a health talk titled Workplace Hazards, delivered by NP Sierra Leone Resident Medical Doctor Dr. Abdul Kalokoh.
According to Dr. Kalokoh, workplace hazards may involve risks associated with oil, electricity, machinery and other equipment. He also highlighted less visible factors that can affect employees’ health and wellbeing.
Dr. Kalokoh said employees’ mindset could influence their mental and physical wellbeing. He also linked negative attitudes towards work with stress and other health challenges, including hypertension.
Broader employee wellness programme
Georgiana Williams, NP Sierra Leone’s Human Resources Manager, said the company’s wellness efforts extend beyond physical activities. She said regular exercise can support employees’ mental and physical wellbeing and contribute to productivity.
Williams said improved mental health could help employees meet deadlines, fulfil commitments and make better decisions. She also said the company provides mechanisms for employees to obtain medical support and consult a doctor when necessary.
She described the Human Resources Department as supporting employees throughout their employment life cycle, from joining the organisation until departure. The department’s wellness initiatives also include monthly opportunities for staff to relax and interact informally across different levels of the organisation.
Williams said NP Sierra Leone provides support for employees’ family and personal lives, including maternity and paternity leave arrangements. She also pointed to long service awards as a way the company recognises significant employee contributions.
Inclusive participation
NP Sierra Leone is continuing its monthly health walk and related awareness activities as part of its wider approach to physical fitness, mental wellbeing and a healthy workplace environment.
Williams said the company’s wellness programmes seek to include employees with physical challenges or limitations, with participation options suited to their abilities.
