The downpours, which continued from Friday through Monday, paralysed sections of Dakar and disrupted movement elsewhere in the country. At least five people have been reported dead in the flooding, according to the source report.
Schools to reopen on 12 October
Primary and secondary schools will now begin the academic year on 12 October instead of the originally scheduled date.
The education ministry said the decision was driven primarily by the need to ensure the “safety and protection” of children. It also said the delay would give authorities time to carry out “cleaning, sanitation, disinfection, and restoration” work at educational facilities.
Forecasts indicated a high risk of further rain in the days ahead, adding to concerns about access to schools and the condition of facilities affected by the flooding.
Response operations under way
Authorities are conducting operations to clear flooded roads, restore traffic, protect water and power supplies, and provide immediate assistance.
The latest flooding has affected several areas, although authorities have not provided a total figure for the number of people impacted or a full assessment of infrastructure damage.
The postponement was described as unprecedented in recent years. It comes during Senegal’s rainy season, which usually runs from June to October.
Flooding follows earlier river disaster
Senegal has also experienced severe flooding in the recent past. In 2024, the Senegal River burst its banks and affected more than 56,000 people in the eastern part of the country.
The latest crisis comes weeks before Senegal is due to host the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics.
