South Africa Deputy Police Chief Resigns Amid Allegations
Former South African deputy police chief Shadrack Sibiya resigned at the start of disciplinary proceedings involving allegations of corruption, rape and child grooming, all of which he denies.
Former South African deputy police chief Shadrack Sibiya resigned on Monday as disciplinary proceedings against him began, while he remains in prison over allegations including rape and the grooming of a minor.
Sibiya’s lawyers tendered his resignation at the opening of the disciplinary hearing. A spokesperson said in a post on X that, because the disciplinary case was continuing, his departure was regarded as a “dishonourable discharge”.
Sibiya had been suspended since September last year. He was arrested last month and is currently in prison. His application for release on bail was postponed to October 13.
Allegations denied
Sibiya faces allegations of corruption, rape and child grooming. He denies the allegations.
The corruption claims are also linked to a judicial commission of inquiry examining alleged corruption within the South African police and possible ties to organised crime.
During testimony before the commission, Sibiya was accused of receiving large sums of cash and gifts from alleged criminals. He denied those claims.
His resignation ends his position in the police while the disciplinary and criminal proceedings remain ongoing. The allegations against him have not been established as facts.
