Art Basel Paris Continues Under Heightened Security Amid Protests
Art Basel Paris is welcoming artists, collectors and art enthusiasts at the Grand Palais under heightened security following violent protests in the French capital.
Art Basel Paris is continuing at the Grand Palais under heightened security after violent protests in the French capital, as artists, collectors and art enthusiasts attend the fair’s fifth edition.
The event brings together 211 galleries from 41 countries. Its programme includes established artists, emerging practices and artworks displayed in public spaces around the Grand Palais.
Security measures surround Grand Palais
Anti-ram barriers and security guards have been positioned around the venue as organisers respond to the tense atmosphere in Paris.
Organisers are also coordinating with Paris police over possible adjustments. Art Basel Paris director Karim Crippa said a comprehensive security plan had been prepared and activated, with the safety of exhibitors, staff, visitors and artworks identified as the priority.
The fair has continued to welcome collectors and art enthusiasts despite the unrest outside the venue.
Works by established and emerging artists
Visitors can view works by Yayoi Kusama, Julian Schnabel and Matthew Wong, alongside new paintings by American artist Drake Carr.
The Emergence section focuses on more experimental installations and features 16 solo booths dedicated to emerging practices. Artist Yann Stéphane Bisso said the section created an opportunity to present work beyond conventional commercial formats.
Works displayed in public spaces around the Grand Palais form another part of the fair’s programme.
Indian collector Saloni Doshi said she witnessed fires, protesters and scenes of panic on arriving in Paris. She also expressed concern about visitors travelling from abroad, according to her account.
Public days for the fair run from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October.
