ECOWAS Court Directs Sierra Leone to Overhaul Loitering Laws
In a landmark ruling, the ECOWAS Court of Justice has mandated that Sierra Leone revise or repeal its loitering laws, which have been found to infringe on human rights. Justice Edward Asante, in delivering the judgment, noted that these laws violate the principles of non-discrimination and equality under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The court highlighted that these regulations unfairly target disadvantaged communities, restrict freedom of movement, and lack clear legal definitions, enabling arbitrary enforcement.
