Final Batch of Sierra Leonean Pilgrims Arrive in Saudi Arabia for Hajj
The second and final batch of 342 Hajj pilgrims from Sierra Leone has safely arrived at the Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madina at 5:00 PM local time. This arrival marks the completion of Sierra Leone’s pilgrimage contingent, joining the first batch of 267 pilgrims who arrived the previous day.
Departing from Lungi International Airport early on the morning of June 1, 2024, the pilgrims traveled aboard Ethiopian Airlines. Their timely arrival in Madina, the second holiest city in Islam, ensures they have ample time to participate in the traditional Ziyara, or visitation of historical holy sites. Additionally, they will perform the five daily prayers at the Masjid al-Nabawi, the Prophet Muhammad’s Mosque, before proceeding to Makkah for the Hajj rituals.
Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Makkah, is a religious duty that every Muslim must undertake at least once in their lifetime, provided they are physically and financially able. The pilgrimage, which this year occurs from June 14 to June 19, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, with around two million participants each year. This five-day event takes place during the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar, known as Zul Hijjah.
Several pilgrims expressed their gratitude for the efficient arrangements made by the Presidential Taskforce on Hajj of Sierra Leone. The collaboration with Ethiopian Airlines facilitated a smooth journey, allowing pilgrims to arrive well in advance of the start of the Hajj rituals. The timely coordination ensured that all logistics, including flights and accommodations, were handled effectively.
The support for the pilgrims in Madina is robust, with the Presidential Taskforce on Hajj working alongside the staff of the Sierra Leone Embassy in Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leonean students, and members of the nationals’ union in the Kingdom. This team is dedicated to providing hospitality, assisting with accommodation, and facilitating the Ziyara. Their presence ensures that the pilgrims’ needs are met during their stay in Saudi Arabia, allowing them to focus on their spiritual journey.
The journey of these pilgrims underscores the importance of Hajj in the Islamic faith, representing both a physical and spiritual undertaking. The successful arrival and support of the Sierra Leonean pilgrims reflect a well-coordinated effort between various organizations and the dedication of the individuals involved.
As the pilgrims prepare to embark on the next phase of their journey to Makkah, their experience in Madina will undoubtedly serve as a profound spiritual prelude. The community's support and the meticulous planning by the Presidential Taskforce ensure that the pilgrims can perform their religious duties with peace of mind and devotion.
