Sierra Leone's Information Minister Represents Nation at UN Women's Commission

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has arrived in New York to participate in the 68th UN Commission on the Status of Women. His presence marks a significant step in spotlighting the country’s ongoing transformation under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio.

Minister Bah, along with his delegation, is scheduled to unveil a documentary film titled “The New Face of Salone” at New York University. This documentary serves as a testament to Sierra Leone’s progress in promoting radical inclusion and nurturing youthful leadership, showcasing the advancements made under President Bio’s administration.

The 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York, scheduled from March 11 to 22, 2024, is a crucial annual event advocating for women’s rights globally. With a focus on strengthening institutions and funding for gender equality, the CSW monitors the implementation of the Beijing Declaration since 1996 under the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Each year, the CSW convenes in New York to address priority themes, evaluate progress, and set global standards. Discussions lead to “agreed conclusions” adopted by member states, with participation from accredited civil society organizations. Notably, the CSW prioritizes sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), emphasizing human rights and access to contraception, emergency contraception, and safe abortion.

Minister Bah’s participation underscores Sierra Leone’s commitment to international collaboration and proactive sharing of success stories on the global stage, demonstrating dedication to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
