Egypt Pays Compensation to Shaimaa Al-Sabbagh’s Family
Shaimaa Al-Sabbagh’s family has received around 300,000 Egyptian pounds in compensation following a prolonged legal case with Egypt’s Interior Ministry.
Egypt has paid compensation to the family of poet and activist Shaimaa Al-Sabbagh, concluding a lengthy legal battle with the Interior Ministry.
According to the family’s lawyer, the payment amounted to about 300,000 Egyptian pounds, or less than 6,000 US dollars. The compensation was received last week, although the exact date was not provided.
A court ordered the payment in 2023, but the family had to continue pursuing the case before the compensation was paid.
Al-Sabbagh’s death
Al-Sabbagh was shot in the back by police while placing a wreath at a memorial in Tahrir for demonstrators killed during protests. The shooting took place on the eve of the fourth anniversary of Egypt’s January 25 uprising.
The pellet used in the shooting was frequently used by police at the time to disperse protesters. Following her death, Al-Sabbagh became a symbol of Egyptian activism.
The officer responsible for her death received a seven-year sentence in 2020. The compensation payment came more than a decade after Al-Sabbagh was killed.
