Employees walked from Lumley to the Aberdeen Beach Roundabout and returned to Lumley. The activity was followed by a health talk delivered by Dr. Abdul Kalokoh, NP Sierra Leone’s Resident Medical Doctor.
Focus on workplace hazards
Dr. Kalokoh’s presentation, titled “Workplace Hazards”, addressed both visible and less apparent risks in the working environment. These included hazards associated with oil, electricity, machinery and other equipment, as well as factors affecting mental and physical wellbeing.
According to the information provided by NP Sierra Leone, Dr. Kalokoh told employees that mindset could influence their mental and physical health. He also linked negative attitudes towards work with possible stress and other health challenges, including concerns such as hypertension.
He encouraged staff to remain alert to workplace hazards, maintain regular physical activity and fitness, and approach their duties with positive attitudes. He also identified a lack of exercise as a possible contributor to physical health problems, particularly for employees who spend extended periods working in offices.
Part of a wider wellness programme
Georgiana Williams, NP Sierra Leone’s Human Resources Manager, described the walk as part of the company’s broader health and wellness programme. She said the initiative is intended to support employee morale and contribute to a healthier and happier workplace.
Williams also highlighted the potential benefits of regular physical activity for employees’ mental and physical wellbeing and productivity. She said improved mental health could help staff meet deadlines, fulfil commitments and make better decisions.
NP Sierra Leone’s reported wellness measures extend beyond the monthly walks. Williams said employees have access to medical support and can consult a doctor when necessary. The company also organizes monthly informal opportunities for staff at different levels to relax, interact and build relationships.
Other support measures described by Williams include arrangements related to employees’ family and personal lives, including maternity and paternity leave, as well as long-service awards recognizing significant contributions.
Participation and inclusion
The Human Resources Department has also said that wellness initiatives are intended to include employees with physical challenges or limitations. Such employees are encouraged to take part in ways suited to their abilities, with support where necessary.
NP Sierra Leone has continued its monthly health walks as part of its commitment to staff health and workplace awareness. The company says its broader programme is designed to support employee wellbeing while strengthening a positive working environment.
