In a statement issued from Freetown on September 23, the international lifestyle and wellness company said it was aware of reports involving individuals described as suspected QNET operatives and foreign nationals currently under police protection. The reported allegations have not been independently established, and the identities and actions of those involved remain unclear.
Company outlines its business model
QNET said its legitimate operations are based on a product-focused direct selling model. Under that system, Independent Distributors promote and sell the company’s products in line with its policies and Code of Ethics.
The company said representations that it can arrange employment, overseas travel, visas or guaranteed financial returns are unauthorized and contrary to its policies. QNET also condemned the use of its name, brand or business model to deceive the public, facilitate fraud, support unlawful recruitment or enable human trafficking.
Cherif Sarr, QNET’s Regional General Manager for Central and West Africa, said reports indicated that some individuals had allegedly been attracted by promises of overseas opportunities before requiring police protection.
“QNET has consistently maintained that employment, visa and travel offers are not part of our business model,” Sarr said. He added that the company welcomed the intervention of the Sierra Leone Police and would cooperate with relevant authorities to establish the facts, protect affected individuals and address any misuse or misrepresentation of the QNET name.
Public warnings and compliance measures
QNET said it has a compliance framework that allows it to suspend or terminate members of its network if violations are established. It also urged members of the public to verify any employment, travel, visa or financial opportunity presented in the company’s name before making payments or sharing personal information.
The company said its “QNET Against Scams” public education campaign has been conducted in Sierra Leone through television, radio, online news portals, social media, print media, billboards, the Sierra Leone state broadcaster SLABC, digital media crawlers and online advertising.
QNET uses the term “Model Q” for criminal methods involving the misuse or impersonation of its name and business model. The company said Model Q should not be confused with its legitimate direct selling operations.
QNET said it was prepared to engage Sierra Leonean authorities and other stakeholders on public education, information-sharing and fraud-prevention initiatives. It also said it remained available to provide information that could help distinguish legitimate activity from unauthorized use of its name.
Regional anti-fraud efforts
The company said it has carried out similar awareness initiatives in Ghana and Senegal. In Ghana, QNET said it has a formal memorandum of understanding with the Economic and Organised Crime Office covering investigation support, disruption of criminal schemes, information-sharing, public awareness and capacity building.
QNET describes itself as a direct selling company offering lifestyle and wellness products, including watches and jewellery, home care, wellness and personal care products, as well as holiday packages. It also cites memberships in direct selling and health-related associations and sports partnerships involving Manchester City Football Club and the Confederation of African Football.
The Sierra Leone Police has not provided an account in the supplied information, and no details were given on arrests, charges, court proceedings, the number of people involved or any reported financial losses. QNET listed its WhatsApp Compliance Hotline, +233 256 630 005, for reports of suspected misuse of its name.
