The inspection took place on 2 October 2026 in Magburaka and included Deputy Minister II Ing. Bryan Smart-Kanu, senior ministry officials and representatives of the National Federation of Farmers Associations of Sierra Leone (NaFFSL).
Readiness and stakeholder engagement
The delegation reviewed key venues and agricultural facilities in Magburaka as part of efforts to assess the town’s readiness to host the celebrations. The visit also provided an opportunity to meet district stakeholders and officials of the Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology.
According to the reported discussions, the engagement focused on stakeholders involved in raising food production and strengthening food security. Feed Salone is the Government’s flagship agricultural initiative, aimed at increasing domestic food production, creating employment and reinforcing Sierra Leone’s food systems.
Focus on poultry production
The minister and his delegation later visited Big Things Poultry Farm, Edimat Poultry Farm, Leecon Hatchery and Grace Organic Poultry Farm in Magburaka and Makeni.
Meetings with poultry farmers and operators addressed access to finance, increasing input costs, production capacity, market opportunities and available financing schemes. The discussions were intended to identify constraints facing the sector and areas where government and development-partner assistance could improve productivity.
The Ministry and the United Nations Capital Development Fund were also promoting loan and grant programmes for poultry farmers. Dr. Kpaka encouraged poultry farmers and other agricultural entrepreneurs to use available financing opportunities and support mechanisms to expand their businesses and increase production.
Speaking about the sector’s importance, Kpaka said: “This sector is close to President Bio’s heart because of its critical role in nutrition security, creating jobs and reducing dependence on imports,”
The minister also said President Julius Maada Bio remains committed to supporting the growth of Sierra Leone’s poultry industry because of its contribution to nutrition, employment and reducing reliance on imported poultry products.
Inspection extended to Kambia
The inspection continued on 3 October 2026 with visits to additional poultry farms in Kambia District. The source report did not identify those farms or provide details about their operations.
The ministry’s engagements come as preparations continue for the World Food Day programme and the third anniversary of Feed Salone. No dates or venues for the celebrations, or details on the amounts and eligibility requirements for the loan and grant programmes, were provided.
