Ghana’s cabinet has approved a decision to formally apply for membership of BRICS, according to the country’s Foreign Minister.
The announcement was made during a visit involving India’s Foreign Minister. Ghana had already sought India’s backing for the application, the Ghanaian minister said.
India backs Ghana’s aspirations
India’s Foreign Minister said New Delhi supported Ghana’s aspirations to join BRICS. However, he added that any membership request would need to be considered by the broader BRICS grouping.
The cabinet approval clears the way for Ghana to pursue a formal application, but the available information does not indicate whether the application has already been submitted or when the grouping might consider it.
Ghana seeks wider partnerships
Ghana’s Foreign Minister presented the move as an effort to broaden the country’s economic and diplomatic partnerships.
BRICS was established by Brazil, Russia, India and China. The grouping of emerging economies has expanded in recent years as it seeks to bring together countries from the global south.
South Africa joined the group in 2009. Ethiopia, Iran and Indonesia have also joined in recent years, while Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are among the other countries listed as members.
