The equipment was officially handed over on October 7, 2026, as preparations continue for nationwide enumeration scheduled for December. Procurement of the devices and accompanying accessories was fully funded by the Government of Sierra Leone.
Digital tools for census collection
The tablets will be used as the primary devices for electronic census data collection. Statistics Sierra Leone said the equipment will enable census personnel to capture, validate and transmit information directly from the field.
The digital system is expected to reduce reliance on paper questionnaires and manual data entry. According to the statistics agency, the approach is also expected to improve the efficiency, accuracy and timeliness of the census process.
Built-in validation checks are expected to help enumerators and supervisors identify and address errors or inconsistencies while information is being collected. The agency has not provided measured results from the use of the system, as nationwide enumeration has not yet begun.
Preparations for December enumeration
The latest equipment adds to 4,000 tablets received in 2025 for the national cartographic mapping exercise. Statistics Sierra Leone said it is continuing to strengthen its systems, processes, technology and technical preparations for the census.
Officials Dr. Colins Opiyo, Samuel Ansumana and Moses Johnson described the arrival of the tablets as an important milestone in the technical and operational preparations for the 2026 census.
Census Night is scheduled for December 1, 2026, with nationwide counting due to begin on December 2. The agency has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible, accurate, reliable and inclusive Population and Housing Census.
Public participation sought
Statistics Sierra Leone said reliable census information will support national planning, policy formulation, resource allocation and evidence-based decision-making.
The agency has called on members of the public to provide accurate information, cooperate with census personnel and help ensure that every household and individual is properly counted.
It added that the success of the 2026 Census will depend largely on the active participation and cooperation of citizens and residents across Sierra Leone.
