Niger Oil Well Blowout Triggers Severe Environmental Incident
Niger's petroleum ministry says a blowout at the Goumeri W8 oil well caused an environmental incident of exceptional severity, with an investigation underway and Algerian assistance.
Niger’s petroleum ministry has described a blowout at the Goumeri W8 oil well in the country’s remote eastern desert as an environmental incident of “exceptional severity”.
The ministry said the incident occurred on September 25 and involved large quantities of crude oil and gas being expelled to a height of more than 10 metres. As of Monday, officials said the situation was partially contained but “not yet fully under control”.
The Goumeri W8 well is located around 1,700 kilometres from Niger’s capital, Niamey, in an isolated area of the country. The site is operated by CNPC Niger Petroleum, the local subsidiary of China’s state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation.
Investigation under way
In a statement read on national television, the petroleum ministry said the causes of the blowout “have not been fully established”. It added that criminal or terrorist involvement had been ruled out.
An investigation is under way with the assistance of Algerian expertise, according to the ministry. No further findings on the cause of the incident were provided.
Broadcast footage described in the report showed an oil slick extending across hundreds of metres of ground. The ministry’s assessment indicated that containment work had reduced the situation but had not brought it fully under control.
Niger’s oil sector
Niger has produced oil since 2011 and extracts and refines tens of thousands of barrels per day, particularly in the Agadem region. The sector operates under the country’s military government, which has been in power since a 2023 coup.
An armed group opposed to the government has carried out sporadic attacks on the 2,000-kilometre pipeline that transports Nigerien crude to Benin. The verified information on the Goumeri W8 incident does not link those attacks to the well blowout.
The ministry’s investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the release and support further efforts to bring the well fully under control.
