Tenth Woman Found Dead in Soweto as Police Arrest Three in Separate Case

Police in South Africa are investigating the discovery of an unidentified woman in a dam in Soweto, amid an ongoing series of femicide investigations in and around Johannesburg.

The woman, believed to be in her twenties, was found partially wrapped in a duvet on Sunday afternoon. Police forces launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

The case was quickly associated with a reported series in which nine other dead women have been found east of Johannesburg since July. The latest discovery has been described as the tenth reported victim in the series.

Police say cases remain unconnected

Although the cases have drawn public attention and sparked a national outcry over the scale of killings against women, police have not established a connection between them.

The hypothesis that a serial killer could be responsible also remains unconfirmed. The identity of the woman found in Soweto has not been established, and her exact age and cause of death were not known from the available information.

Several of the women in the reported series were found in similar circumstances, including partially wrapped in sheets or unclothed. Some also showed physical injuries that could indicate a struggle, according to the report.

Three detained over Ntimba killing

Separately, South African police announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with the killing of Jabulile Ntimba.

Ntimba was found half naked and wrapped in a sheet in Dawn Park, east of Johannesburg, the previous week. The three people detained in connection with her death are one man and two women.

The suspects were due to appear in court on Monday morning. Their detention concerns Ntimba’s death and is separate from the investigation into the unidentified woman found in Soweto.
