Carlos Queiroz has left his position as Ghana coach after the Ghana Football Association said it had mutually agreed with him to terminate his contract.
The decision came after Ghana suffered a 4-2 home defeat to Gambia in the AFCON 2027 qualifying round. The loss followed a 2-0 defeat away to Ivory Coast, leaving Ghana without a point from its first two Group C matches.
Ghana appeared to be in control at the Accra Sports Stadium after Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan scored to give the Black Stars a 2-0 advantage. Gambia then scored four times to complete the turnaround and deepen the pressure surrounding the team.
Queiroz tenure ends after renewed mandate
Queiroz was reappointed by the Ghana Football Association on September 2. However, Ghana lost both of its AFCON qualifying matches under his renewed mandate.
Across seven matches during the reported tenure, Queiroz recorded one win, two draws and four defeats. Ghana scored five goals and conceded 10 during that run.
In a parting message published on the association’s website, Queiroz said ending the relationship was considered the appropriate decision under the circumstances.
“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else,” he said.
Queiroz also said that the required conditions had not been fully established and that the team’s recent performances contributed to the decision.
“The necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end,” he said.
Ghana faces qualification challenge
Ghana is reported to be six points behind Ivory Coast and Gambia after two matches and faces a difficult task to avoid missing a second successive Africa Cup of Nations tournament. The top two teams from each four-team qualifying group advance.
Queiroz first took charge under a four-month contract in April, with the initial mandate focused on guiding Ghana to the 2026 World Cup. He helped the Black Stars reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 2010 after a victory over Panama and a draw with England.
Ghana’s campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the round of 32, after which Queiroz’s initial mandate concluded. The association later brought him back on September 2.
The Ghana Football Association is now searching for stability again. No successor or timetable for appointing Ghana’s next coach has been provided.
