"Alternative Bondo Rite Introduced in Moyamba District to Combat Female Genital Mutilation"
In a significant step towards ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Sierra Leone, the Forum Against Harmful Practices (FAHP), in partnership with the Praise Foundation, has officially launched the Alternative Rite of Passage (ARP) in Kayama Chiefdom, Moyamba District. This new initiative, also known as the Bloodless Bondo Rite, offers a culturally respectful alternative to traditional Bondo practices, excluding the harmful practice of FGM.
Supported by Irish Aid, the ARP ceremony was a clear demonstration of the collective efforts by various stakeholders to protect the health and dignity of young girls while preserving cultural heritage. The event in Moyamba marks the third successful implementation of the ARP in the country, following earlier ceremonies in Port Loko and Niawa Lega, Bo District.
Councilor Elizabeth Dambo, an outreach officer for FAHP, highlighted the importance of this initiative in maintaining cultural identity while ensuring the safety and well-being of girls. Reverend Jane Lahai of the Council of Churches in Sierra Leone added that this event could signify a turning point in the community's approach to traditional practices, particularly in a district historically linked to FGM.
The ceremony was well-attended, with key figures including representatives from Irish Aid, the Moyamba District Chief, religious leaders, and local community groups. The event ended with a unified pledge to support the transition from FGM to the Alternative Rite of Passage, underscoring a strong commitment to the health and empowerment of girls across the district.
