Calvin Klein Ad Featuring FKA twigs Banned by UK Advertising Standards Authority

A Calvin Klein advertisement showcasing British singer FKA twigs has been banned by the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) due to its portrayal of her as a "stereotypical sexual object." The poster, featuring the singer with a shirt draped across her body, revealing part of one breast and the side of her buttocks, along with the caption "Calvins or nothing," prompted two complaints citing inappropriate sexualization.

The ASA upheld the complaints, stating that the ad used nudity and focused on FKA twigs' physical features rather than the clothing, presenting her as a stereotypical sexual object. The ruling emphasized that the image's composition directed viewers' focus to the model's body, rather than the advertised clothing. Describing the ad as "irresponsible and likely to cause serious offense," the ASA declared that it must not appear again in its complained-of form.

While the two complainants also raised concerns about Calvin Klein ads featuring model Kendall Jenner, the ASA deemed them acceptable. The authority stated that one image, where Jenner held her breasts, did not portray her as a sexual object, and the other fell within the acceptable bounds of lingerie advertising.

Calvin Klein defended the FKA twigs advert, asserting that the images were not vulgar and featured two confident and empowered women identifying with the brand. They argued that the poses were natural and neutral, emphasizing that both FKA twigs and Jenner collaborated with the company, approved the images, and expressed a sense of empowerment and confidence from participating. Calvin Klein also pointed out that male models were featured in the same campaign.

FKA twigs, known for celebrating her sexuality and femininity in her music and performances, has not commented on the ban. In the past month, she provided an update on her upcoming album, revealing a creative process that spanned various locations, indicating a follow-up to her 2022 mixtape Caprisongs and her studio albums LP1 (2014) and Magdalene (2019). The ban on the Calvin Klein ad raises questions about the portrayal of women in advertising and the delicate balance between artistic expression and potential societal implications.
