Dayton Names Sierra Leone as Its First Poet Laureate
Dayton has appointed Sierra Leone as its first-ever poet laureate, marking a historic moment for the city. The announcement was made at the Paul Laurence Dunbar House Visitor Center, where city officials and arts organization Culture Works celebrated the occasion.
“This is a testament to the power of words, storytelling, and the artistic spirit of our community,” said Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims. “Poetry has the unique ability to inspire and unite, and we look forward to the ways our Poet Laureate will amplify Dayton’s voices.”
Leone, a longtime leader in Dayton’s spoken word and poetry scene, has been active in the arts for over two decades. In 2000, she co-founded Oral Funk Poetry Productions with her husband, Robert Owens Sr., helping to bring award-winning talent to the city. She also co-founded Signature Educational Solutions, expanding arts education efforts.
Reflecting on the honor, Leone emphasized the deep influence of Paul Laurence Dunbar and the role poetry plays in her life. “Poetry is a way of life for me. It is all I know and all that I am,” she said.
The poet laureate position was approved by city commissioners in 2024, requiring applicants to live or work in Dayton. Leone’s appointment highlights the city’s commitment to fostering creativity and celebrating its literary heritage.
