Sierra Queens Miss Out on 2028 Olympic Qualifiers Amid Growing Concerns for Women’s Football

Sierra Leone’s senior women’s national team, the Sierra Queens, will not be part of the qualification race for the 2028 Olympic Games after being excluded from the Confederation of African Football’s list of participating nations.

Their absence means the team will not compete for one of Africa’s limited slots at the Los Angeles Olympics, dealing a fresh blow to the country’s presence in top-level women’s football.

This development comes at a surprising time. In May 2025, the Sierra Queens celebrated a major achievement by winning the WAFU tournament, a success that raised hopes for continued progress on the international stage. However, that momentum has not carried forward into consistent participation in major competitions.

In another setback, the Sierra Leone Football Association has also pulled the team out of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. This decision further reduces opportunities for the players to gain experience, improve as a unit, and stay competitive internationally.

Across Africa, more countries are investing in women’s football and expanding their involvement in international tournaments. Sierra Leone’s absence from key competitions stands in contrast to this growing trend.

Experts often stress that regular participation is essential for any national team to develop. Without frequent matches and tournament exposure, it becomes harder to build team chemistry, sharpen tactics, and climb global rankings.

For the players, the impact is immediate. Missing out on major tournaments like the Olympics limits their chances to showcase their talent, grow their careers, and gain international recognition.

While the team has shown clear potential, recent developments highlight a gap between promise and long-term progress. Attention is now likely to shift toward whether stronger planning, funding, and commitment can help the Sierra Queens return to consistent competition in the future.
