Cargo Ship from Freetown Intercepted With Huge Cocaine Haul in Atlantic Operation

Sierra Leone has come under international attention after a cargo vessel that departed from Freetown was intercepted in the Atlantic Ocean carrying a massive  of cocaine, described by Spanish authorities as one of the largest seizures ever recorded.

Security forces in Spain reported discovering between 35,000 and 40,000 kilograms of cocaine aboard the ship, which was stopped off the coast of Western Sahara while heading toward Europe.

The vessel, registered in the Comoros Islands and measuring about 90 metres in length, had left Freetown on April 22 before setting course for the Mediterranean. Its journey was cut short during a targeted operation by Spain’s Guardia Civil near Dakhla.

Following the interception, the ship was escorted to Las Palmas, where it is now under investigation by Spanish judicial authorities.

A total of 23 crew members were arrested during the operation. Those detained are said to be from several countries, including the Philippines, Angola, and the Netherlands.

Officials described the seizure as unprecedented in scale, releasing images that show the حجم of the confiscated drugs. The operation is believed to be part of a wider effort to disrupt international drug trafficking networks.

Although there is no indication that Sierra Leonean nationals were directly involved, the fact that the vessel departed from Freetown has raised concerns about the country being used as a transit point in global drug routes. The incident adds to ongoing scrutiny of West Africa’s role in international narcotics trafficking.

Investigations are still ongoing as authorities work to uncover the full details behind the shipment and those responsible.
