Caritas Freetown Empowers Sierra Leone Police to Tackle Gender-Based Violence

Caritas Freetown, the development and humanitarian arm of the Catholic Archdiocese of Freetown in Sierra Leone, recently concluded a comprehensive training program designed to equip a segment of the Sierra Leonean police force with the essential skills to effectively address cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Led by the Executive Director of Caritas Freetown, Fr. Peter Konteh, the initiative showcased a fruitful collaboration between the Catholic Church entity and the Police Family Support Unit (FSU) across 20 different stations.

The primary objective of this partnership was to streamline SGBV investigations and court referrals, ensuring prompt and fair justice for victims. The training program, conducted in quarterly sessions, focused on imparting psychosocial approaches and case management techniques to the participating officers. This comprehensive approach aimed at equipping them with the necessary tools to handle sensitive cases, including child abuse, while adhering to the standard operating procedures of the Sierra Leone police.

Furthermore, in addition to enhancing investigative skills, Caritas Freetown provided essential stationery to support police investigations into SGBV issues. This initiative is part of a broader project aimed at providing support to victims of gender-based violence and implementing preventive measures in targeted communities across Sierra Leone. Generously funded by Manos Unidas and executed by the development arm of the Catholic Archdiocese of Freetown, the program also encompassed advocacy efforts to raise awareness and foster behavioral change within communities.

Community members received training on recognizing and preventing emotional abuse, while special sessions engaged men and boys to deepen their understanding of gender-based violence issues and foster a culture of respect and equality.

Despite the notable successes achieved through these endeavors, challenges such as insufficient funding and delays in police investigations continue to persist. Nevertheless, Caritas Freetown remains steadfast in its commitment to combatting gender-based violence and advocating for the rights of women and girls throughout Sierra Leone.
