Elephant Attacks Injure Two in Karene District
Two men were injured in Karene District this week following an attack by an elephant, highlighting the increasing tension between humans and wildlife in the area.
The incident happened while the victims were traveling on a motorbike, further heightening fears among locals who are now reluctant to use certain roads due to the risk of encounters with elephants.
This attack follows numerous reports of elephants destroying crops in the Thambaka Yobanyie Chiefdom. Farmers from villages such as Thagasa, Moreya, and Sanya have seen their rice and groundnut farms devastated, threatening both their livelihoods and food supplies.
“The elephants have been destroying our farms for years,” said Mohamed Kamara, youth chairman of Moreya Village. “It’s a serious concern, especially for those of us who depend on rice and groundnut farming.”
Local authorities and residents have called for urgent government action to protect both people and crops. The fear of elephant attacks has disrupted farming, limited travel between villages, and hindered economic activities.
“We need help,” Kamara pleaded. “The elephants are ruining everything we’ve worked for. We urge the government to find a solution to safeguard our farms and ensure our safety from these animals.”
