Five Councilors May Lose Seats For Repeated Absences From Pujehun District Council Meetings
During the recent 5th Ordinary Council Meeting held in Bengani Town, Sakrim Chiefdom, Pujehun District, significant concerns were raised by Chairman Foday Kandeh Rogers about the consistent absenteeism of five councilors. These councilors have repeatedly failed to attend council sessions without providing proper justification, prompting Chairman Rogers to highlight the potential consequences of their actions.
Chairman Rogers emphasized that the continued absence of these councilors violates the 2022 Revised Local Government Act. This act stipulates that any councilor who misses three consecutive council meetings without a valid reason is subject to automatic removal from their position. The councilors identified for their repeated absences include Abdul Karim Fofanah from Makpele Chiefdom, Bobor Jakama from Perri Chiefdom, Hindolo Alusine and Andrew Mustapha Fullay from Malen Chiefdom, and Mohamed Kamara from Pejeh Chiefdom.
Citing Section 22D of the revised act, Chairman Rogers underscored the importance of attendance and participation in council meetings. He reiterated that the council maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards absenteeism, which he suggested might be motivated by the desire to collect sitting fees without fulfilling their duties. The chairman made it clear that the council is committed to enforcing the law and ensuring accountability.
To address this issue, Chairman Rogers instructed the council’s administrative arm to draft letters to the five councilors in question. These letters will demand explanations for their repeated absences and require them to justify why they should not face the penalties outlined in the law. This step is part of the council's broader effort to maintain transparency and uphold the standards expected of its members.
Chairman Rogers also took this opportunity to stress the importance of accountability and transparency within the council. He urged the remaining councilors to enhance their participation in council activities, emphasizing that their active involvement is crucial for the effective governance of the district. The chairman’s call to action is aimed at fostering a culture of responsibility and commitment among all council members.
The Pujehun District Council remains dedicated to addressing local needs and promoting development. Chairman Rogers reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling the council’s mandate and encouraged collaboration among councilors to achieve communal objectives. By ensuring that councilors adhere to their responsibilities, the council aims to better serve the community and support the district's progress.
This situation serves as a reminder of the critical role that local government officials play in the development and governance of their communities. The Pujehun District Council's proactive approach in dealing with absenteeism reflects its commitment to maintaining high standards of governance and ensuring that all councilors contribute to the collective efforts aimed at improving the lives of their constituents.
