Liberia Hosts Funeral for Sierra Leoneans Involved in Tragic Unity Party Office Accident

Sierra Leone somberly marked the tragic events of November 20, 2023, during the Unity Party Headquarters celebration of Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s victory. What began as jubilation turned into mourning as a vehicle collided with the celebratory crowd, causing multiple casualties and severe injuries.

 

The incident, which shocked the nation, resulted in a significant loss of lives, with victims hailing from the Pujehun District, intensifying the sorrow. Among those mourned by the community were Sulaiman Vanjai and Mariama Koroma from Paywahun in the Barri Chiefdom.

 

Four individuals, including Jattu Kallon and Kula Ansumana, sustained critical injuries and are currently hospitalized. The vehicle, driven by an individual named William, was unregistered and caught fire after the collision. William reportedly fled the scene in another vehicle.

 

Swift government intervention included collecting the remains of the deceased and providing medical attention to the injured at John F. Kennedy Hospital in Liberia. On November 22, 2023, the victims were laid to rest at 4:30 pm in Sarmuck Camp, Liberia, following prayers at the West Point mosque. The solemn ceremonies paid tribute to the lives lost, expressing solidarity with grieving families and friends.
