Sierra Leone Labour Congress Prepares for May Day with Landmark Conference and Workers’ Parade

The Sierra Leone Labour Congress is set to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day with a historic lineup of events, including the country’s first-ever Social Dialogue Forum and National Labour Conference. The celebration, themed “Shaping the World of Work: Innovation, Digital Transformation and Just Transition,” will run from April 29 to May 1, 2025.

The two-day Labour Conference, hosted in collaboration with the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security and the Sierra Leone Employers’ Federation, is being held at the Miatta Conference Centre. It aims to bring together workers, employers, and policymakers to discuss the evolving landscape of employment, with a focus on digital transformation and fair labour practices.

The main event on May 1 will feature a grand workers’ parade uniting participants from both the formal and informal sectors. Workers from the East End of Freetown will gather at PZ, while those from the West End will meet at the Aberdeen Road/Wilkinson Road junction. Both groups will march to the Miatta Conference Centre for the central ceremony.

The Labour Congress has called on workers across all professions—including traders, teachers, drivers, musicians, and technicians—to join in this show of solidarity. The event seeks to highlight the importance of collective effort in pushing for improved working conditions and inclusive economic progress.
