Sierra Leone Highlights Progressive Gender Reforms at Global Forum

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, took the spotlight at the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, presenting the country’s efforts to promote gender equality and democratic rights. The focus of the forum was on engaging men and boys to counter resistance to these reforms.

In his remarks, Minister Bah highlighted the government’s record under President Julius Maada Bio, describing it as one of the most progressive periods in Sierra Leone’s history. Key achievements he mentioned include abolishing the death penalty, decriminalizing criminal libel, strengthening laws against sexual offences, banning child marriage, lifting restrictions on pregnant girls attending school, advancing gender equality legislation, and proposing reforms to address Female Genital Mutilation while promoting sexual and reproductive health rights.

He also noted that while these reforms have expanded freedoms, they have faced backlash, often fueled by misinformation portraying gender equality as a threat to culture and tradition.

“The experience of Sierra Leone mirrors global challenges,” Minister Bah said, calling for stronger civic education and engagement with men and boys to challenge patriarchal narratives and ensure continued progress on gender equality.

He reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to inclusive policies that protect citizens’ rights, strengthen democratic governance, and create opportunities for all.
