Pujehun District Residents Call for Nursing School to Address Healthcare Education Shortage
Residents of Pujehun District in Sierra Leone are advocating for the establishment of a nursing school to address a significant shortage in healthcare education. Currently, the district, with a population of approximately 335,574, only has a midwifery school, compelling many aspiring nurses to seek education elsewhere. The recent opening of applications for the Maternal and Child Health Aide (MCHA) course at the midwifery school saw overwhelming demand, but limited enrollment left many qualified candidates without educational opportunities.
Community leaders and potential students are in strong support of the proposed nursing school. They believe it will not only provide essential educational opportunities, especially for young women, but also enhance local healthcare services and contribute to the district's economic and social development. The new institution aims to offer comprehensive programs with affiliations to over 60 healthcare facilities, which would help mitigate the acute shortage of healthcare professionals and strengthen the district's health infrastructure.
