Sierra Leone Launches Its First Iron Rod Factory, Marking Industrial Milestone
Sierra Leone has inaugurated its first iron rod manufacturing plant, a significant step toward industrial development. The facility, operated by Odhav Multi Industries, was launched on November 23 in Songo Village and will begin production by the end of the month.
President Julius Maada Bio hailed the project as a transformative milestone for the nation, emphasizing its potential to drive industrial growth. "This launch marks a new era of industrial take-off for Sierra Leone," he stated, expressing optimism about the country's readiness for industrial transformation.
Trade Minister Ibrahim Alpha Sesay encouraged residents of Koya Chiefdom in Port Loko District, where the factory is located, to embrace the development. He highlighted the government's commitment to fostering private-sector collaboration and creating an environment conducive to fair competition, despite global economic challenges.
The plant is expected to reduce Sierra Leone's reliance on imported iron rods, which currently costs the country at least $250 million annually. With a projected annual output of 120,000 metric tons, the factory will significantly cut expenses and bolster local production.
Odhav Multi Industries also operates in Guinea, where its steel factory produces 200,000 metric tons of steel yearly. Leveraging Sierra Leone’s abundant iron ore deposits, the Songo facility aims to position the country as a key player in the regional steel industry.
