Sierra Leone Police and UNDP Strategize Reforms for Enhanced Security
The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have initiated a strategic partnership to modernize the country’s policing system and improve security services. This collaboration began with a high-level meeting between Inspector General William Fayia Sellu and UNDP Resident Representative Fredrick Ampiah in Freetown.
Discussions centered on transforming the Sierra Leone Police into a modern Police Service and reviewing the Police Act to align with international standards. These efforts aim to foster professionalism, accountability, and public trust while strengthening community-oriented policing.
The proposed reforms are designed to address emerging security challenges and improve collaboration between the police and local communities. Modernization efforts include updating outdated policies to enhance operational efficiency, ensuring adherence to human rights, and reinforcing the rule of law.
Fredrick Ampiah reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting these initiatives by building institutional capacity, improving training programs, and securing resources to ensure effective policing. These efforts highlight the importance of robust institutions in maintaining sustainable peace and security.
