Calgary Woman Imprisoned in Sierra Leone Faces Abuse, Says Daughter

The daughter of a Calgary woman detained in Sierra Leone is pleading for Canadian authorities to intervene, claiming her mother is being starved and beaten while in prison.

Hawa Hunt, 43, was arrested on December 22 after a social media video resurfaced in which she criticized Sierra Leone’s president and first lady. A dual citizen of Canada and Sierra Leone, Hunt had traveled to Freetown to participate in a reality TV show but was taken into custody over allegations of inciting public disorder.

Her 20-year-old daughter, Alicia Hunt, says her mother is enduring “inhumane” conditions at Pademba Road Prison. She reports that her mother sleeps on a dirt floor in overcrowded cells, suffers from malnutrition, and is forced to use unsanitary facilities. Hunt also claims she is regularly beaten by prison guards.

Alicia has contacted Canadian officials multiple times, urging them to take action, but she remains frustrated by the lack of response. While Global Affairs Canada has acknowledged Hunt’s arrest, it has not commented on allegations of mistreatment.

Hunt’s case has drawn international attention, with human rights organizations calling for her release and urging Sierra Leonean authorities to uphold due process. Despite several bail attempts, she remains in custody as her case moves to the high court.

As her mother’s detention continues, Alicia fears for her safety and questions whether Canadian officials will step in before it is too late.
